William Lashly joined both the Discovery, and Terra Nova expeditions, with Captain Scott.
Scott’s southern journey began on October 24th 1911, when Lashly, Evans, Day and Hooper departed Cape Evans, with two motorised sledges. They were dubbed, the Motor Party.
Within five days both machines had failed, were abandoned on the ice, and the four men began manhauling what supplies they could.
On January 4th 1912, Lashly, Crean and Lt. Evans were the last to see Scoot and his Pole Party alive, when they parted company with the men, on the Polar Plateau, 150 miles from the South Pole.
On their return journey, Evans suffered from snow blindness, and then was ravaged by scurvy. Lashly and Crean were later both awarded the Albert Medal, for their selfless and heroic efforts, which saved Evans’ life.
They had ignored their Lieutenant’s order to leave him behind and save themselves.
