The Antarctic Alphabet - J
Jehu was the first of Scott’s ponies to perish, on the Southern Journey.
He was reluctantly dispatched, with a bullet, by Lawrence Oates, on November 24th 1911.
Although the pony was weakening, it was noted he had plenty of march left in him. The reality was Jehu was shot to provided meat for the sledge dogs, with Cecil Meares calculating that the carcass provided four feeds for the dogs.
